No, I don't think its our future. Women can no longer be forced into having children if they do not want them. Margaret Atwood meant for the book to be a comment on the way societies impose their mistakes on the general population. Powerful and wealthy 'forces' were the bad people in this novel and the general population payed the price of letting them have that power. They became slaves to the people in power, a bit like it actually is in reality, depending on which country you live in.
