I think this case illustrates the need for us as a country to re-evaluate the ways in which we deal with mental health issues. Populist movements of the past destroyed the institutes that used to house and care for the mentally ill. Change was certainly needed, but so were the institutions. It's also become much more difficult to institutionalize someone against their will. Again, change was needed, but with incidents such as this some change is still needed to balance individual rights against public safety.
