Anyone interested in discussing with me the "feminist" themes in Mulan (don't worry, it's not homework)?
Well, from the 13 year old perspective, I don't understand why they didn't make her seem stronger, because she seems helpless at the beginning and, well, acts like a girl. But, to answer your question about how it should be, I don't think they should have changed the story only to sell more DVDs. Take Pocahontas for example. They did not at all keep the story true to original storytellings. At the time that she met John Smith, she was 13 YEARS OLD. And he moved back to where he came from, and she got married to another man named John. The message in the movie had nothing to do with the real message, which was that Pocahontas was a leader even though she was 13 (although I wouldn't quote me on that because I am not 100% sure). In Mulan, the message was great as well, and I honestly think the messages were equally great.
